Union County kicks off the first round of post-season play tonight at the Timken Sports Complex with first pitches for softball and baseball slated for 7:30 p.m.

After winning the Region III-AAA title, Union County secured the No. 1 seed for District 3 and was rewarded with back to back home games to start the playoffs.

The first meeting of post-season pits the Jackets against No. 4 Walhalla. Win or lose, Union County will be the home team again on Monday, facing either Chapin or Travelers Rest depending on the outcome of tonight’s games.

Softball

The Lady Jackets finished Region III-AAA runner-up behind Chapman, earning the No. 2 seed in District 4.

In round one, Union County will host Palmetto which won the Class 2A state title last year before moving up to 3A.

“Palmetto is a really good hitting team,” said Union County Assistant Coach Jay Allen. “They’ve got a USC Upstate commit and a Carolina Gamecock commit who both have a ton of power. They’re going to be solid.”

The Lady Jackets also have hitters stocked throughout the line-up including senior Abby Allen who recently signed with Presbyterian College.

Assistant Coach Jay Allen said he will be relying on the production of batters one through nine.

“We’ve been hitting a ton this week. We have to swing the bats and keep the ball down. We’ve got a lot of confidence and if we come out and play like we’re capable of playing, we’ll be fine.”

In addition to its hitters, Union County will call on a pair of freshman pitchers, Hannah Sailors and Payton Martin. “They’ve been strong all year long,” said Allen.

While the Lady Jackets take on Palmetto at 7:30 tonight, the district’s No. 1 seed, Chapin, is set to tangle with Berea.

The winners of both games will meet on Monday while the losers square off in an elimination contest.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
