The USC Union Bantams broke a 7-7 tie in the seventh inning on Sunday to secure an 8-7 win over Craven Community College and sweep the three-game series.

Bubba Means led off the final inning with an impressive at-bat that Bantams Head Coach Paul Wilkes called the best of the year so far. Means battled at the plate, fouling off pitch after pitch before, with a 3-2 count, he found the one he was looking for. Means drove it off the wall in the left center gap for a triple. Mike Wood and Alec Acevedo received intentional walks to set up the force play at home, a decision that came back to haunt Craven.

“They brought their outfield and infield in, and were playing do-or-die with no outs,” said Wilkes. “Taylor Sims stepped up to the plate and drew a walk to score Bubba for the winning run. It wasn’t the most exciting way to get a win, but we will take a win any way we can get it.”

Means was named Player of the Game with three walks, a triple and one run scored.

Cory Robertson pitched four innings for USC Union and was relieved in the top of the fifth by Vincent Price who picked up the win. Robertson allowed four earned runs and three unearned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Price allowed five hits, with one strikeout, a walk, and hit a batter.

Mike Wood led the offense with two singles, an RBI, a stolen base, an intentional walk and one run scored.

Nick Owen had two singles and two RBI.

In game one, strong bats helped the Bantams to an 8-4 win. Dontee Stewart was named Player of the Game with a single, a double and an RBI. Hunter Watts also contributed two hits and swiped two bases.

Spencer Rash was the winning pitcher. He allowed seven hits, four runs, three of which were earned, with seven strikeouts, and seven walks.

The Bantams touched up Craven’s pitching staff for nine hits in the second game of the series for a 5-2 win.

David Henderson went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a single and one run scored to earn Player of the Game honors.

Taylor Sims RBI tripled and scored a run while Parker Burt singled with an RBI, a stolen base and scored a run.

Watts, Owen, Wood and Jaquane Foster each added a hit.

Watts tossed six innings to record the win. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

The Bantams faced OC Tech last Wednesday and picked up a 6-4 win.

Alec Acevedo was named Player of the Game with a 3-for-4 performance. Acevedo hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to push the Bantams to a 4-3 lead that was never relenquished.

He also singled, tripled and scored two runs.

Hunter McAfee was the winning pitcher. He allowed three hits, four runs (one earned), with five strikeouts, three walks and two HBP in his six innings of work.
