UNION COUNTY — As he works for her reelection, Union County Republican Party Chairman Mike Fowler says he wants to have Gov. Nikki Haley come to Union County more often in the months ahead.
Fowler is one of 164 co-chairs of the Haley campaign’s statewide grassroots steering committee. The co-chairs represent all of South Carolina’s 46 counties and Fowler is the only co-chair from Union County. As co-chair for Union County, Fowler said he will be responsible for organizing grassroots events to support Haley’s reelection bid. He said he hopes to bring Haley to Union County to campaign in the future.
“I have volunteered to work Union County for the governor on behalf of her election campaign,” Fowler said Tuesday. “We plan on having her in the county more often than in the past.”
Haley is scheduled to be in Union County on April 11 at the invitation of the Union County Chamber of Commerce. She will serve as the keynote speaker at the chamber’s annual member meeting and awards banquet which will be held in the Tabernacle Baptist Church Family Life Center. The banquet is normally held in March but was rescheduled by the chamber to accommodate Haley’s schedule.
Fowler said he is looking forward to working for Haley’s reelection, citing her successful efforts at job creation and her opposition to the growth and intrusiveness of the federal government.
“I think what she’s been able to oversee in her time in office including the creation of 30,000 jobs proves she’s been a success as governor,” Fowler said. “Also there’s her stance against the expansion of Medicaid under Obamacare and her stance against the intrusion of federal regulations in the State of South Carolina.”
The Republican Party has been trying to recover since the defeat of its 2012 presidential candidate by President Barack Obama. Fowler said he feels South Carolina can play an important role in helping the GOP overcome that defeat by helping it again focus on what he said are the most important issues facing the country.
“I think South Carolina is going to be one of the key states that’s going to lead to the rejuvenation of the GOP,” Fowler said. “I think we’ve lost some focus on the key core issues and gotten into infighting over some less important matters. I think we need to refocus our energies on stopping the growth of government and the intrusion of the federal government into our daily lives.”
Fowler said that the GOP also needs leaders who will be willing to make the case that not only must the growth of government be stopped and its size reduced, but that past efforts to stop it have failed.
“The biggest problem I see the GOP having today is we don’t have a leader who will stand up and say we haven’t cut the size of government, we’ve only slowed the growth,” Fowler said. “We need a leader who is willing to go into the media and articulate the values Republicans champion.”
Reorganization
On Monday, the Union County Republican Party held the first of two precinct reorganization meetings in the Grand Jury Room of the Union County Courthouse.
The party reorganizes at the precinct level every two years, signing up residents of the county’s precincts to serve a precinct chairmen and delegates to the county convention which this is year is tentatively scheduled for Monday, April 15. The delegates to the county convention will then have the opportunity to run for election as delegates to the state Republican convention which this year is being held Saturday, May 5.
Fowler said Tuesday that by the end of Monday’s meeting the party had organized 14 precincts. A make-up reorganization meeting will be held Monday, April 1 in the Grand Jury Room of the courthouse and Fowler encouraged those who did not attend the first meeting to attend the second one and sign-up. While residents from the precincts that have already been organized are welcome to attend and sign-up, Fowler especially urged those from the precincts that have not been organized to come and help organize them.
“It would be good if they contacted me or just showed up at the Grand Jury Room on April 1,” Fowler said. “It’s extremely important because it shows the county’s dedication to the electoral process. When we are organized as a county and involved in that process, people from outside the county notice this. It shows that there are people in Union County who are engaged in what’s going on in Columbia.”
The precincts that have not been organized by the GOP are:
• Adamsburg
• Carlisle
• East Buffalo
• Kelton
• Santuc
• Ward 1, Box 1
• Ward 1, Box 2
• Ward 3
