Union County and Daniel made it as far as the second inning of Wednesday’s second round of the Class 3A upperstate softball tournament before a phone call halted play.

After a request was made by Chapman High School for the High School League Office to allow the completion of Tuesday’s first round game that was shortened due to rain, the Panthers and Spartanburg School District 1 petitioned for a declaratory relief which set up Wednesday’s second round stoppage.

On Tuesday, Chapman had taken a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning when the game was suspended and later called to an end by officials, who reverted to a rule in the SCHSL manual which states that after five innings, a game is considered complete. Daniel was ahead 2-0, declaring the Lions the winners and sending them to Union to face the Jackets in the winner’s bracket.

Chapman filed the protest late Tuesday and was informed by the SCHSL that the game would remain as called.

The school sought a court injunction on Wednesday and according to Union County Interim Athletic Director Will Hickson who is also serving as the Head Coach of the softball team, a decision as to whether or not Tuesday’s Daniel/Chapman game will be resumed could be made as early as Friday morning.

Seneca High School’s softball team was also impacted by the news, having traveled to Chapman for an elimination game at 6 p.m. only to be informed that the contest had been cancelled until further notice.
