UNION — The Lady Jackets have a Region Championship under their belts and are now on a quest for the first Class AAA State Championship in Union County High School history.
“We really wanted a first round home game,” said Head Coach Angela Burke. “Now that we have that, we’re looking for another one on Thursday.”
Union County drew Seneca for a first round opponent and the two will square off at 6 p.m. Monday night. The Lady Jackets feature senior guard Kristin Giles who not only has good hands but can also shoot from anywhere on the court. Giles eclipsed 1,000 points scoring midway through region play and averages 17 point per game. Giles gets help from guard Shouda Stevens who is dangerous from three-point land and Marianna Eison who plays small forward but can also handle the ball well. Down low Union County showcases Cierra Mitchell and Cece Moorman. Although the two post players are often at a height disadvantage (particularly Moorman at 5’7) they more than make up for it with skill. Mitchell turned in 19 points and 11 rebounds in Union County’s final region game against Clinton.
Meanwhile Seneca has relied heavily on senior center Ciara Boggs since its leading scorer, Kianna Holland, has been out with a shoulder injury. Holland is a Duke commit who averages 35 points per game. Boggs scored 27 points in the region finale against Daniel and averages 13 points and 9 rebounds per game. If Mitchell and Moorman can contain Boggs in the paint, Union County should have no trouble getting that second round home game.
