UNION — The Union County Carnegie Library will use a $200 donation to help children and adults “Dig Into Reading” this summer.
The Union County Family & Community Leaders group recently presented the Friends of the Library with a check for $200 for the library’s Summer Reading Program.
“We just really appreciate the funding that was provided to the library,” Library Director Ben Loftis said. “It will help us provide a quality summer reading program for students in Union County. We just really appreciate the donations that help us continue to provide services to the county.”
The library’s summer reading program will run from Monday, June 3 to Friday, July 26. The theme of this year’s program is “Dig Into Reading” and Loftis said it’s goal is to encourage children to keep reading during the summer and promote adult literacy.
“Primarily, it is geared toward keeping students reading during the summer break,” Loftis said. “We also want to maintain interest in literacy in adults as well.”
The program will involve a variety of activities for children of different age groups, for adults, and for families.
Children
For children, the summer reading program will kickoff with the “Dig For Buried Treasure” event which will be held at the library on Monday, June 3 from 10 a.m.-noon. The event is open to children ages 6-11.
On June 11, there will be a scavenger hunt at the library for children ages 6-11 from 2-4 p.m.
The June 10 event will feature a visit by Ronald McDonald who, in keeping with theme of the summer reading program, will encourage children to “dig into reading.” Loftis pointed out that Ronald McDonald’s visit to the library is a regular part of the summer reading program. He said the event usually draw 80-100 children and their parents.
On June 18, there will be a Treasure Hunt for pre-school children from 2-4 p.m.
Porkchop Productions will present the play, “Three Billy Goats Gruff” on June 20 at 10 a.m.
“They are a traveling theater group that performs at schools and libraries,” Loftis said. “We’re really excited to bring them to the Union library this summer.
On June 27 there will be a Scavenger Hunt for Teens from 2-4 p.m.
There will be a Family Build a Bug craft program from 10 a.m.-noon on July 8. Loftis said this will be a craft program that families can do together.
On July 15, the library will show the children’s movie “The Adventures of Tintin” from 2-4 p.m.
A Beneath the Surface teen makeover will be held on July 18 from 1-3 p.m. Loftis this will involve tips on makeup and makeup items that the teens will be able to take home with them.
On July 22 the library will show the teen movie “Holes” from 2-4 p.m.
Guessing Games
The library will hold two guessing games during the summer reading program.
Lofits said the first, which will begin June 5, involves a jar full of worms and bugs. He said participants will guess how many worms and bugs are in the jar and the person who guesses correctly or those who come close will receive prizes.
The second guessing game will begin on July 10 and involve buried treasure. Loftis said this will also involve a jar, only this one will be filled with a variety of little toy treasures. Participants will attempt to guess how many treasures are in the jar and the person who guesses correctly and those who come close will win prizes.
