UNION COUNTY — A father’s impact on their children’s lives cannot be underestimated and children who are blessed to have a loving and caring father know this and love their fathers for all they’ve done for them. In observance of Father’s Day — which is Sunday for those of you who haven’t picked up a card — The Union Daily Times asked our readers to submit memories of their father. What follows is what we received. We hope you enjoy reading about these very special men as much as we did. So, from us at The Union Daily Times: Happy Father’s Day!
Gerald Brock
To the most wonderful, loving, supportive, Godly, caring daddy a girl could ask for. I could search the world over and over but never find another daddy like you not that I would ever want too. You have always been my hero. You have not ONLY been a wonderful dad to me, but a great role model as a grandfather to both my girls. We love you more than words could ever say. We look forward to the role model you will be as a great-grandfather as we already know you will be the BEST!
With all our love,
Donna, Lesley, Nicole and Jase
James Mosley
In Honor of my dad James Mosley. You have gotten Alzheimer’s and you fail to comprehend. Your body goes on living, your mind has almost reached its end. So I guess we can say good-bye to the funny man we knew, but will always remember the fun times and always will love you.

Daddy, even though it has been almost 49 years since you were taken from us, I still love you and miss you.
I have a lot of good memories of you. You were a good loving father.

Johnnie L. Owenby Sr.
My Father is Johnnie L. Owenby Sr. and I have a lot of fond memories of him. He has five children — three daughters and two sons and raised a grandson. My daddy worked in the mill most of his life and he retired from the City Of Union. He was a hard working man. He grew up with 11 siblings. He always had a garden each summer and he raised most of our food. We always had plenty of food. My fondest memory of him is that he would get groceries on Thursdays when he got paid and he would come home and get one of us kids to get the groceries with him. We all got a turn to go and we would tell who was going that week what we wanted so they could get it for us. He would also go by the Shamrock Drive In on Buffalo Road to get us a hamburger and take it home to eat. We loved payday. My Grandpa Owenby lived next to us as we grew up and he and my Daddy would raise pigs and chickens and I can remember when hog-killing time would come and what a day that would be. My daddy and Grandpa Owenby instilled hard work, honesty and to have good morals in all of us. I have a lot of wonderful memories of my life as a child. I would like to honor my daddy and Grandpa Owenby and thank them for a job well done. I love the song “Grandpa, tell me about the good old days.” It reminds me of my childhood days. Thanks so much Daddy and Grandpa Owenby for all you have done for me. I am proud to call you Daddy and Grandpa.

William Nelson Gilkison Jr.
Happy Fathers Day to the best Dad in the world, William Nelson Gilkison Jr. I thank God every day for blessing me with a wonderful family! Dad, you’ve done a lot for your kids and we appreciate every single thing. We want you to know you are very much appreciated and respected and we hope the best for you. Your grandboys look up to you as a father figure because you are a great role model. I hope they become like you as they grow older. I thank you for making me the woman I am today. You have always been by our side and never turned your back on us. We love you for that. I love you so much Dad and this is your day, so take advantage of it.

I am lucky, I still have my dad. He is always there to help me, whatever I may need. After purchasing our own home, little things needed to be fixed and he was there ready to help myself and my family. Many times my girls got in trouble, he was there. He would talk to me, and them. He is a wonderful dad. When I was small, I remember him coming in from work with his work boots on and they had holes in the ends but he knew his children may need something so we came first. That is very rare now. I love my daddy with all my heart and would not trade him for anything. If God gave me the chance to pick a different daddy. I would pick the same one.

John Porter (with pic John Porter)
John Porter is my daddy. He is a good man. When I was a child he took me fishing and camping. He took me to church and learned me about God. He was strict on me and I thank him for that. He taught me how to love and be a good mother. He has kept a roof over my head many times. He is a loving and kind man. If I need him he will be there. He will do what he can for me, my sisters and his grandchildren. He will always give everyone hugs. All I have to say is my daddy is a good daddy.
