The Fair Forest Chapter, NSDAR, met January 8 in the Union County Museum meeting room.

Regent Margaret McCarley called the meeting to order. Jane Owenby read the Devotional, “Priorities for the New Year,” from Open Windows. Chairman Amy Bruce led the chapter in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the U.S., the American’s Creed, the Salute to the Flag of S.C., and the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner.

Chairman Martha Whitener read the General’s Message, “The Army Will Remain Capable Through a Draw Down.” Secretary Mrs. Bruce read the minutes of the previous meeting.

The program, “Women Soldiers in the American Revolution,” was presented by Martha Whitener. Since there were no physical exams, a handful of women, especially rural women whose hands and face showed a life of physical outdoor labor, were able to sneak into the ranks and were accepted as equals because of their fighting ability. Many female soldiers who survived the war, and never discovered, are untraceable because they didn’t seek government pensions after the war.

The next meeting, February 5, wil be held in the Union County Museum meeting room. Director Ben Loftis, Union County Carnegie Library, will present the program, “Family Search and Family History.”
