The Union County basketball team took to the hardwood on Monday for a summer scrimmage with Spartanburg and Newberry at the UCHS gym.
Spectators first saw Newberry and Spartanburg face off. Union County then met up with Newberry for four eight-minute quarters, followed by Spartanburg. The Jackets held their own in both contests, even though Newberry is a veteran team, coming off a runner-up State finish and Spartanburg also returns several players.
Coach Will Hickson feels that his young team learned from the experience and will continue to progress.
“They learned that they have to take better care of the ball and that they have to hit the weight room,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do now and during the school year, but we will be competitive.”
The Jackets lost seven players to graduation but will return a handful of play makers and also have an abundance of talent moving up.
“We’re young, we have seven freshmen,” said Hickson. “This was a learning experience and we have to do all the little things. But I’m excited about this group. They’re willing to work and they were not intimidated by the physically stronger teams-I was impressed with that.”
