UNION – Union County has been looking to establish a ground game that included its star running back, Trayvond Davis, and on Friday, the senior provided his team with the needed element.

Davis finished the night with 19 carries for 195 yards rushing, two catches for 38 yards and two touchdowns to lead Union County to a 42-40 win over Fairfield Central.

“I thought Tray played ‘lights out’,” said Head Coach Steve Taneyhill. “He played a great game.”

Davis sprinted for a 23-yard touchdown late in the second quarter to give the Jackets their first lead of the game and his 30-yard haul in the opening minutes of the third frame set up a Union County score on the ensuing play.

“The offensive line stepped up tremendously and helped me out a lot,” said Davis. “I just put my fate in their hands and they opened the holes for me.”

In the final minutes of the contest, Davis broke loose for 54 yards all the way to the one-yard line where he was brought down just shy of scoring his third touchdown of the night. “I wish we could’ve punched it in,” said Taneyhill. “We jumped offsides down there, but I was trying to get him in the endzone.”

Davis will have plenty of scoring opportunities in the upcoming weeks and is expected to make some noise for the Jackets. A fast, straight-ahead runner, Davis is a capable back who keeps his legs going to pick up the extra yards and provides Union County’s high-powered offense with a key variable that will keep opponents on their toes.
