The Wolverines lost two matches Monday night to Greenwood and Ware Shoals.

“Last night was a tough one for us,” coach Jarrod King said. “We knew that we were giving up too many weight classes to pull-off a team victory over a 4A program the caliber of Greenwood.

“Surprisingly however, we won more head-to-head matches against Greenwood than we did Ware Shoals,” King said.

“The loss to Ware Shoals was a setback. We matched up evenly with forfeits against Ware Shoals.  When that happens, we expect to come off the mat with a victory,” he said.

Whitmire lost to Greenwood by a score of 51-24.

Trey Nelson by pin in the 1st round, 119 pounds; Devin Armstrong lost pin in the 1st round, 125 pounds; Dylan Graves wrestled up a class and won by pin in the 1st round, 130 pounds; John-Paul Miller wrestled up a class and lost by pin in the 1st round, 135 pounds; Seth Horton won by pin in the 1st round, 140 pounds; Jordan Baker lost by pin in the 1st round, 152 pounds; Tim Epps by pin in the 1st round, 171 pounds; Ethan Campbell won by pin in the 1st round, 189 pounds; Seth Shouse lost by points, 215 pounds.

Whitmire lost to Ware Shoals last night by a final score of 42-24.

Nelson lost by pin in the 1st round; Armstrong won by forfeit; Graves won by pin in the 1st round; Miller lost by pin in the 1st round; Horton won by forfeit; Baker lost by pin in the first round; Epps lost by pin in the 2nd round; Campbell won by pin in the 1st round; Shouse lost by pin in the 3rd round.

“We are going to learn from this setback and move forward as we prepare for our first home match against Landrum and Emerald on Dec. 16 at 6 pm.,” King said.

On a positive note, Whitmire had two of its middle school wrestlers find success on the mat Monday.

Matt Swain (85 lbs.) obtained his first victory on the mat over his opponent from Greenwood.

Also, Zack Alexander (135 lbs.) went 2-0 last night in his first two matches ever by pinning his opponent from Greenwood and Ware Shoals.
