Going where a judge tells you not to can not only land a person in jail but, in one man's case, face criminal charges in two counties.

John Arthur Rutherford, 44, 132 Douglass Heights, Union, is charged by the Union Public Safety Department with violation of an active court order of protection.

A public safety officer was dispatched to 200 Louise St. on Tuesday morning in response to a report of domestice violence. The officer talked to Rutherford who had left the building and was walking toward Broad Street. He reported Rutherford told him he and the woman at the residence had gotten into a verbal altercation. Rutherford said he'd gathered up some of his belongings and left.

The officer questioned the woman who told him Rutherford had recently returned to Union after spending some time in Columbia. She said he'd shown up at her door and said he only wanted to get a couple of his shirts. The woman said Rutherford then entered her residence and began picking up a number of items. She said she told Rutherford to leave several times and he became verbally abusive.

The woman told the officer she had an order of protection on file against Rutherford. The officer confirmed the order through the Union County Sheriff's Office and through the NCIC. He was also advised there were outstanding warrants for Rutherford from Richland County.

Rutherford was arrested for violating the protection order and transported to the Union County Jail where deputies served him with the Richland County warrants.

Investigations

The sheriff's office is investigating an incident where a man said he was attacked and robbed late Tuesday night.

The victim told deputies he was walking down the railroad tracks near Bobo Street shortly before 10 p.m. when he was approached by two white males in their late teens and early 20s who came up to him and asked for a light. He said they then grabbed him, took $1,500 from his pocket and ran off.

Burglary

The sheriff's office is also investigating a break-in that resulted in the theft of $200 worth of copper wire and $700 worth of damage to a residence at 222 Church St. Buffalo.

The complainant told the responding deputy sometime within the last six months someone forced open the crawlspace and stripped all the copper wiring from beneath the building. He said the building was damaged when the culprit(s) cut out the wire.

Arrests

The following person was arrested by the public safety department

James Berry Weeks, 60, 412 Foster St., Union, charged with disorderly conduct/public drunk.
