UNION – While the race for U.S. President and Vice President was in a dead heat at press time, Republican candidates Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan won the majority of the votes in Union County.

Among Union County voters, Romney and Ryan won 6,566 votes (52.63 percent) to Democratic incumbents Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s 5,748 votes (46.08 percent).

Trailing the candidates of the two major parties were Libertarian candidates Gary Johnson and James Gray, who received 71 votes (0.57 percent); Constitution candidates Virgil Goode and Jim Clymer, who received 42 votes (0.34 percent); and Green Party candidates Jill Stein and Cheri Honaka, who received 48 votes (0.38 percent).

Union County Republican Party Chair Michael Fowler said there was plenty of support for Romney and Ryan during this campaign, as well as other Republican candidates throughout the county.

“It was really exciting for us,” Fowler said, pointing out that this was his first presidential race as the local party chair.

Union County Democratic Party Chair Ann Stevens said the local support for President Obama was also great.

“The support and momentum have been very high,” Stevens said.
