UNION – Recus Hughes had the hottest hand on the court Monday night, leading Union County to a 60-59 win over Mid-Carolina.

“What a great individual effort,” Union County Head Coach Will Hickson said. “As a team we didn’t play very well, and we still won, so imagine what we’ll do when we get the kinks out.

The Jackets trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half before mounting a comeback. Midway through the fourth quarter Victor Ruth picked the pocket of a Rebels ball handler and laid it in for two points.

Down 55-47, the Jackets quickly made up ground with Hughes going on a seven-point shooting spree to give his team the lead. Mid-Carolina scored on a fast break and Kalay Jones answered for Union County with a jumper.

With :07 remaining the score was tied at 59-59 and Hughes was sent to line where he sank the game-winning free throw. “We were down but our guys just didn’t quit and that’s a testament to their character,” said Hickson.

Lady Jackets pick up win

The Lady Jackets also picked up a win over the Rebels, 51-37. CeeCee Morman had a big night in the paint for Union County with eight points, 12 rebounds and three steals while Cierra Mitchell chipped in 15 points, seven rebounds and a steal.

Kristin Giles contributed 12 points, one assist, one rebound and three steals and Mariana Eison had 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Dexlie Inman netted six points and Di’Aundria Thomas had two.

“We are having a great start this season,” Head Coach Angela Burke said. “Practices are going well so far and we are looking to improve each game. The girls are excited about the upcoming year and are working hard to achieve their goals. Our team has a combination of experience and youth. I believe this will be an exciting team to watch.”
