UNION — The Union County golf team returned from the State tournament in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday with a 16th place finish.
Junior Kanani Lodge turned in an 18th overall performance, shooting 87 on Monday and 79 on Tuesday.
“We were pumped up and ready to play when we got there,” said Head Coach Kim Baulkum. “We did much better on Tuesday than we did on Monday. We struggled a little bit with the course. It was a lot longer than what we’re used to. There was also an event going on that the course was being used for on Sunday so we didn’t get a practice round like we’d thought we would. Being so unfamiliar with the course really hurt us.”
Baulkum and Assistant Coach Kristen Spencer plan to use the tournament as a learning experience and will return all but one starter in 2013.
“We know what areas we need to improve on for next year and we have every intention of going back and making a run at State,” she said. “We’ve worked hard this year and we’ll do the same thing next year. This golf program is more than a passing whim — It’s gonna be here for a while.”
