Coming Swarm
9th Grade
INMAN - Union County's 9th grade football team defeated Chapman 16-14 on Thursday.
Coach Will Hickson told the team that last week's game meant nothing. "We had a decent week in practice and for the next 40 minutes all you have to worry about is football. Remember, there is no ‘I' in ‘team.' Avion (Carter) had a great game last week because everyone did their job."
Union drew first blood in the second quarter with a touchdown pass from Adam Gregory to Keiston Bishop. The two-point try was missed.
Chapman returned the favor, scoring on a sweep with 4:46 left in the quarter and made the two-point play, going ahead 8-6.
Union came right back on a 20-yard run to the 28-yard line by Ross Norris. Then Union passed deep to Bishop, who fought off the taller safety for a big catch on their 3-yard line. With 11.3 seconds left and without a kicking tee, Dayne Jackson put through the uprights, with 2.3 seconds left on the clock. The Jackets led 9-8 at the half.
In the third quarter, Union struck again with D'Extra Goggins bulling his way in from the 3-yard line. The extra point was good.
But the Panthers weren't done. With just 1:35 left on the clock, Chapman struck on a 60-yard sweep to close the scoring. Union held on the two-point conversion attempt.
Chapman tried an onside kick but it failed, covered by Lee Wilburn.
Co-captains were Jamarcus Rice, Austin Miller, and Goggins
