Driving 15 miles over the speed limit helped land a man and his girlfriend in jail on drug charges Friday morning.
Byron Lee Johnson, 37, 87 Lowery St., Whitmire, and Lindsey Rene Crocker, 27, 1111 Lakeside Drive, Apt. 53, Union, are both charged by the sheriff’s office with possesson with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute marijuana within half-mile of a school.
Narcotics officers with the sheriff’s office had received complaints over the past two months about Johnson bringing marijuana into the county. While investigating the complaints, officers learned Crocker was Lindsey’s girlfriend and they placed her apartment under surveillance.
While watching the apartment Friday morning, officers saw Johnson leave in a silver Chevy Suburban heading toward Union. The detectives notified the Union Public Safety Department of this and public safety officers stopped Johnson for going 50 mph in a 35 mph zone. They issued him a speeding ticket and while they were doing this, narcotics officers spoke with Johnson about searching his car.
Johnson refused them permission to do so but admitted he’d smoked marijuana earlier that morning. Based on this, the K-9 unit was brought in and during a perimeter sniff the dog alerted his handler to the passenger side of the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was made which turned up $10,668 in cash in a plastic bag inside the center console area of the car.
Investigators found another $860 in cash on Johnson. The report filed on the incident states Johnson is unemployed and has no reason for having so much money in his possession.
A narcotics officer and a uniformed deputy then went to Crocker’s apartment, spoke with her and received permission to search the place. They found a bag which contained approximately two pounds of marijuana that Crocker said Johnson had brought to her apartment a couple days earlier. Also seized at the home were several pipes deputies reported are commonly used to smoke marijuana.
Johnson and Crocker were placed under arrest and transported to the Union County Jail. They remained there until Saturday when Crocker was released on bond and Sunday when Johnson was released on bond.
Attacking A Person And A Car
Alcohol seems to lie at the bottom of an incident which landed a Jonesville man in jail for attacking a woman and then attacking a car.
Jaran Harris, 22, 443 Whitlock Lake Road, was is charged by the sheriff’s office with assault and battery and malicious damage to personal property.
Deputies were dispatched Monday to a residence at 173 West Springs Highway, Lot 5, in response to a report of an assault and damage to a vehicle. Witnesses told deputies Harris had been very intoxicated and became irate for no apparent reason and hit a woman in the face and began choking her. Harris was made to leave the building but the witnesses said once outside he began kicking one of their cars. Two of the witnesses said they saw Harris kick out the car’s left front headlight and try to kick out the driver’s side window.
Harris was arrested and transported to the jail where he remained until being transferred Tuesday to the Union County Detention Center.
