A Union Christian Day School senior’s first online published work could win her a $1,000 scholarship.

Laura Leigh Todd is a semi-finalist in travelbigo.com’s 2009 FTF Teen Travel Writing Scholarship contest. Laura Leigh, who says she’s always enjoyed writing but has never had anything published, was told about the contest by her mother, Lori, who found the website while searching the web for possible scholarships for her daughter who plans to attend Winthrop University as a music education major in the fall.

“I just like to write about the crazy things in life, but this is the first time I’ve actually tried to win something with my writing,” Laura said.

Laura Leigh was home-schooled by her parents until her junior year when she was enrolled in Union Christian Day School. Lori said her daughter has always enjoyed writing and began writing on a regular basis about her life approximately five years ago.

“She writes like she speaks,” Lori said. “Always upbeat and positive. We’re really proud of her.”

Lori said that Laura Leigh will be writing more essays as scholarship opportunities arise and will shortly be writing an essay for a scholarship offered by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The essay Laura Leigh submitted in September to travelbigo.com was about the trip she, her mother and one of her friends took to New York City earlier this year during spring break. The three stayed for a week and the contrast between the urban, cosmopolitan culture of the Big Apple and the rural, southern culture of Union made a big impression on Laura Leigh. It’s that contrast that lies at the core of her essay.
