For only the third time in the history of the organization, a mayor of the City of Union has been elected to the board of directors of the Municipal Association of South Carolina.
Mayor Harold Thompson was among the mayors, city council members and municipal administrators elected to serve as officers or as member of the board of directors during the association’s 72nd Annual Conference at Hilton Head earlier this month. As a member of the board of directors, Thompson will represent the Catawaba Regional Council of Governments area of South Carolina which includes Union, York, Chester and Lancaster counties. Thompson said Monday that he feels his service on the board of directors will not only give Union greater influence within the association but in state government as well.
“It’s a great honor to be elected to the Municipal Association board of directors,” Thompson said. “We’ll be involved in policy making for the association and helping the cities that are members navigate the policies implemented by the association. Also, there will be various issues that come up on the state level, in the State House and we will be working with state representatives on issues that will effect the City of Union as well as other cities around the state.”
While this will be his first term on the board, Thompson said he believes he is only the third Union mayor to serve on the association’s board of directors. He said the others were C.P. “Bill” Stribling and James W. Blackwood.
Conference delegates also elected the association’s officers including:
• President — Clinton Mayor Randy Randall
• First Vice President — Sumter Mayor Joe McElveen
• Second Vice President — Anderson Mayor Terence Roberts
• Third Vice President — Conway Mayor Alys Lawson
• Immediate Past President — Orangeburg Mayor Paul Miller
In addition to Thompson, delegates at the conference six other municipal officials to the 13-member board:
• Greenwood Mayor Wellborn Adams who will represent the Upper Savannah Council of Governments area
• Hilton Head Island City Administrators Steve Riley who will serve as the board’s at-large member.
• Santee Council Member Sheryl Patrick who will serve as an at-large member.
• Georetown Mayor Jack Scoville who will represent the Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments area
• Florence Council Member Octavia Williams-Blake who will represent the Pee Dee Regional Council of Governments area
The Municipal Association of South Carolina is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit Association of incorporated cities and towns dedicated to raising the standards of municipal government through a broad range of services.
