It started early Monday morning and by the end of the day “Summer Slam 3” had resulted in the arrest of 34 people on a variety of drug and other charges.
In a statement released Monday evening, Union County Sheriff David Taylor announced that deputies with his office together with officers of the Union Public Safety Department had joined with the Union County Drug Taskforce to carry out Summer Slam 3. Taylor said that the operation began at 7 a.m. when deputies, officers and members of the task force took to the streets to serve a total of 86 arrest warrants on 43 individuals. In addition to the arrest warrants, Taylor said law enforcement personnel also had a search warrant for a residence where drugs were being stored and sold.
Of the 86 arrest warrants law enforcement personnel have served or will serve as part of Summer Slam 3, 71 were for drug offenses and 30 of those involved what Taylor said were “some type of a controlled prescription medication.” He said this shows that abuse of prescription medication is a major problem in Union County.
“When 42 percent of your drug arrests are for controlled substances, we have a serious problem,” Taylor said.
Summer Slam 3 is the third major anti-drug sweep conducted by law enforcement this year. The previous sweeps were in January and May. As of Monday evening, Summer Slam 3 had resulted in the arrest of 34 individuals by either the sheriff’s office or the public safety department. Taylor said the sweep will continue until all the suspects sought by law enforcement are taken into custody.
Capt. Greg Pickens of the public safety department pointed out that “this latest round-up is just another example of the continued effort and tireless dedication between the Union Public Safety Department and Union County Sheriff’s Office to assure the safety and quality of life for all citizens of Union County.”
The following individuals were arrested by the Union Public Safety Department:
• Wesley Chad Murphy, 30, 302 Blassingame St., Union, charged with two counts of larceny, second-degree burglary, and first-degree burglary.
• Daniel Lamarcus Wilkes, 21, 860 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Jonesville, charged distribution of Marijuana and distribution of crack cocaine.
• Brenda Darlene Rice, 52, 217 Gault Avenue, Union, charged with distribution of crack cocaine.
• Quandarius Shamar Dawkins, 17, 1224 N. Pinckney St., Union, charged with distribution of crack cocaine and distribution of a controlled substance.
• William Peshawn Craig, 35, 113 Rowell Lane, Union, charged with distribution of crack cocaine.
• Jasmine Simone Gore, 22, 112 Thomas Ranch Road, Union, charged with distribution of marijuana.
• Shaquille O’Bryant Barber, 18, 120 Dover Road, Jonesville, charged with distribution of marijuana.
• Melvin Sampson, 51, 288 Oak St., Winnsboro, charged with open container.
• Jamie Oraine Bell, 24, 103 W. Henrietta Street, Union, charged with distribution of crack cocaine.
• Markeem Darneil Dawkins, 19, 141 Oak Grove Road, Lot 18, Union, charged with distribution of marijuana and distribution of controlled substance.
