UNION — On Wednesday, the USC Union student lounge was filled with staff from The Blood Connection, as well as students and faculty who wanted to donate blood.
The Blood Connection staff talked about the importance of donating blood, quoting their mission statement, which is as follows:
“Blood sustains precious human life. Its presence and flow allows us to seek the purpose of our existence and attain life’s milestones. When we share blood, wounds heal; individuals thrive; and families remain whole. We share blood to enrich our life experience, casting aside our differences to link the human race through a common, natural bond.”
“Whether in our community or beyond, blood donors perform daily miracles,” said Gregory Hart, President and CEO of The Blood Connection. “It could be a five-year old undergoing chemotherapy, a victim of a car accident or a patient receiving an organ transplant. There’s also a good chance you or I will need a blood transfusion in our lifetime. Blood donors are special members of a caring, socially responsible citizenry that assures that every two seconds there is blood available.”
Hart said blood collection would not be possible without the willing support of donors.
“It’s a safe and easy way to help others,” Hart said.
Those who are interested can also help by hosting a blood drive at their place of work, association or worship. Some organizations have become “partners for life” with The Blood Connection, from small civic organizations and church groups to large corporations.
“Regardless of their size, all are vital to the community,” Hart said.
