The 31 arrests made Wednesday by local and state law enforcement are part of an ongoing and systematic effort to dismantle the drug trade in Union County, Sheriff David Taylor says.

“Summer Slam II” began at 7 a.m. when deputies with The Union County Sheriff’s Office, officers with The Union Public Safety Department and SLED agents began rounding up individuals sought on a total of 55 drug possession and trafficking charges. By 2 p.m., 31 people had been arrested, a quantity of drugs including crack cocaine and more than two pounds of marijuana, guns, cash and an automoble confiscated. The operation included raids on two Union residences and one in the Jonesville area.

During a Wednesday afternoon press conference announcing the operation, Taylor said the arrests are part of an ongoing investigation that started in January. He said the goal of Summer Slam II — and the first Summer Slam operation in 2009 — is to not only take drug dealers and drugs off the streets, but also to gather information and put authorities in a position where they can successfully arrest and prosecute the high-level suppliers and financiers of the drug trade in Union County.

“We’re taking more drug dealers off the street,” Taylor said. “We got a lot of dope off the street this morning.

“A lot of those we arrested today will probably get out on bond today but we’ll keep loading their wagons (with charges) until they either talk or get some time,” he said. “This is how we’ll get the information we need to go after the people who may not touch the drugs but provide the resources. We’ll keep arresting the street level dealers to the point where they either talk or serve time.”

Taylor, who was joined at the press conference by Capt. Greg Pickens of the public safety department, said Tuesday’s arrests were the result of the hard work and cooperation between his office, the city and SLED. A total of 25 deputies, public safety officers and SLED agents were involved in Summer Slam II. Taylor praised the city-county Narcotics Taskforce for its ongoing efforts to uncover and dismantle the drug trade in the county.

“This is the kind of work it takes, it’s a team effort,” Taylor said. “Our Narcotics Taskforce has been very succcessful.”
