After trading the lead several times with Boiling Springs in Sunday’s weekend finale, the heavy hitting Mavericks travel ball team battled to pull out a 13-12 win.

The Mavericks fell behind in the top of the second when Boiling Springs used four hits to plate seven runs but answered back with six of their own to add to the two they’d scored in the first.

Jimmy Johnson and Charles Johnson drew back to back walks before Aaron Bailey laid down a bunt to reach first and advance both runners. Jimmy Johnson reached home on a passed ball and an infield single scored Charles Johnson. Brady Forest smacked a two-RBI double to center field and Troy Millwood followed with an authoritative RBI triple to tie at 7-7. Michael Todd Harris lined an RBI single to left field, giving the Mavericks the 8-7 lead before Boiling Springs got out of the inning.

An RBI single in the top of the third knotted the game back up at 8 before the Mavericks used hits from Quay Cooper, Charles Johnson, Bailey, Collin Maier and Harris to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the third, 11-8.

Boiling Springs had a four run inning in the fourth and the Mavericks returned the favor, tallying four of their own, to enter the fifth down by a single run.

The Mavericks held Boiling Springs scoreless in the inning and were allowed one more at bat as the time limit expired.

Jimmy Johnson led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a walk and stole second before his brother, Charles, hit a fielder’s choice that resulted in both runners being safe. Bailey pounded out a hit to right center that plated the tying run and Charles Johnson was batted in by Maier to score the winning run.

In game one of the round robin tournament, the Mavericks defeated the Rock Hill Hitting Facility, 7-2. Game two saw the Carolina Prospects slip past the Mavericks, 5-3 and game four was a 8-0 loss to the Caines of Charlotte.

The Mavericks will travel to East Cobb, GA for a seeding tournament this weekend.
