SPARTANBURG — Spartanburg Community College will host a free open house drop-in on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, from 4-7 p.m. in the Dan Lee Terhune Student Services Building located on the SCC central campus in Spartanburg. The event is open to students, parents and career seekers interested in SCC’s academic programs and student services.

Attendees will learn about the admissions and financial aid processes as well as an overview of academic programs the College offers. Faculty will be available to answer questions about the more than 100 degree, diploma and certificate programs offered by SCC. Staff will also provide information about the many support services that help students make the most of their educational experience such as career planning, counseling, student disability services, student activities, student records, library services, advising and tutoring, and scholarship and grant opportunities. Tours of the central campus, classrooms and state-of-the-art laboratories will also be available for those who are interested. Attendees can also receive door prizes, including a $500 SCC scholarship from the SCC Foundation.

“This is a great opportunity for recent high school graduates, parents, those considering attending college for the first time and those seeking a new career to find out about all the possibilities that SCC provides,” says Kathy McKinzie, director of enrollment services at SCC. “All the things that make SCC a smart choice for a college education — affordability, convenience, transfer options, our accreditation, our more than 100 programs of study leading to jobs in high-growth, high-demand career, and the career success of our graduates — will be featured at the open house.”

“We know that once people get to know us and visit our campus, they’ll be better equipped to make the decision on whether SCC is the right choice for them,” adds McKinzie.

SCC’s open house event is also a chance for attendees to connect with current SCC students who can speak from their own experiences about why they chose SCC. Respiratory therapy student Tashia George says the faculty were the deciding factor for her in selecting SCC.

“I’ve been to other colleges and I’ve experienced what’s out there. I choose to attend SCC over other respiratory programs because of the faculty – they were the selling point for me,” she explains. “They do whatever they can to help you be successful, in and out of the classroom, and you don’t find that everywhere. I have a face and a name at Spartanburg Community College, I’m not just a number.”
