Lockhart Middle School picked up a pair of wins at Whitmire on Tuesday. The Lady Red Devils escaped with a 5-4 victory while the boys game was a higher scoring affair at 39-21.

“We played pretty well all night,” said Lockhart boys basketball coach Thomas Parks. “Our guys moved the ball around on offense and got some good shots off. We had good, solid defense and rebounded well. We didn’t get much off the press but we actually went 7-10 from line, so that was an improvement from Monday.”

The Devils (6-4) fell to Blacksburg, 40-38 in overtime on Monday at Lockhart Middle and free throws could have made the difference.

“We went 6-17 from the line,” said Parks. “Those shots came back to haunt us.”

Blacksburg jumped out to a 10-3 advantage in the first quarter before Lockhart rallied for 16 points in the second. The Red Devils chipped away at the Blacksburg lead and had a chance to win in regulation with a buzzer beater that was just off the mark. Turnovers proved costly for Lockhart in overtime and Blacksburg snagged the victory.

“We made some mistakes but you’ve got to be proud of how hard these boys play,” Parks said. “They never quit. The effort was there, but it always is.”

Ryan Vaughan paced the Devils with 21 points. Zach Gordon chipped in 5 and Hunter Plemmons added four. Ethan Bailey contributed three points while Dalton Vinson and Morgan Foster each had two.

The Lady Devils fell to 2-7 on Monday with a 16-14 loss to Blacksburg.

Heather Petty led the scoring with 10 points. Shealia Lindsey contributed two points while Chasity McCluney and Lauren Melton had one apiece.
