UNION – First and foremost this week, The Union Daily Times would like to acknowledge Sam Phipps’ near perfect weekend.
I almost called him on Saturday night to see if he realized he hadn’t missed a game yet but it’s kind of like that unspoken rule in baseball of not talking to your pitcher when he’s got a no-hitter going. Anyway, the Florida State/N.C. State game spoiled Sam’s winning streak and the result was 15 correct picks out of 16 games.
I’m sure Sam wondered who in the world would’ve thought to pick N.C. State. Nobody on this panel but that’s not saying a whole lot after last week.
With a disheartening six misses I found myself tied for last place with Kevin Shropshire who put up 12-4.
“Hey Tiff, your mom called,” Kevin informed me.
Yeah, Shrop? What’d she say?
“She wanted you to know you left your GAME at home.”
Looks like everybody did except Sam who dethroned Doc Lipsey this week. Doc has sat atop the leader board for some time now and an 11-5 weekend was just uncharacteristic.
“I figured I’d give somebody else a turn,” explained Doc. “It gets awful lonely at the top.”
Steven Addis remains in third place and he blames the Carolina Panthers for that.
“Every week I pick them and every week they lose,” declared Steven. “They ain’t even playing this week and they’ll still get beat.”
Our celebrity guest picker, 93.3 The Planet radio personality Jeff Lewis Neal will probably stick to music after turning in a 8-8 record but we’d like to extend to him an open invitation on our panel … He makes us look good.
This week Union County takes on Clinton and we are all in agreement on the outcome of that game. In college action, the Texas/Oklahoma game should be a barn burner and the SEC battle in Baton Rouge has created some discrepancy on our panel.
