Union County’s first encouter with Spartanburg was not quite the battle that fans were expecting and the ninth grade Jackets team suffered a 30-8 loss on Thursday night.
A 15-yard hookup between quarterback Dierrius Smith and wide receiver Montray Feaster moved the chains in the early minutes of the contest before Union County was forced to punt. Both teams went three and out until the Jackets received a first down courtesy of Smith with under a minute left in the first quarter. A facemask penalty put the Jackets on Spartanburg’s 30-yard line and running back Ty Thomas picked up eight yards as the clock wound down.
The Jackets’ drive came to an end after two plays to start the second quarter and Spartanburg answered with a 20-yard touchdown run. The point-after-kick was wide-left and the Vikings took a 6-0 lead with 7:38 left in the half.
Union County went three and out and Spartanburg saw a 60-yard kick-off return brought back due to an illegal block but found paydirt on the following play to take a 12-0 lead. The PAT was unsuccessful.
The Vikings tacked on six more in the third quarter when a blocked punt was ran in for a touchdown, then put up an additional twelve in the fourth with 30- and 20-yard hauls to pad the lead at 30-0.
The Jackets’ lone touchdown came with 1:09 left on the clock. Smith connected with Demarcus Brown for a 30-yard gain and a pass interference call landed Union County on the 10-yard line. Smith maneuvered through the Spartanburg defenders to put it in the endzone and another quarterback keep got the job done on the two-point-conversion. Time expired shortly after with the Union County ninth grade team falling, 30-8, in game one of the 2012 season.
