Reminder

It’s time to put up our Angel Memorial Display. It’s a wonderful way to remember our loved ones, especially during the Christmas season.

A new Angel is $20 for the first year, and $10 for the year after. All proceeds from the Angel Memorials help pay for the beautiful lights that adorn our town during the holidays.

Christmas Parade

The Town of Lockhart and the Lockhart Christmas Parade Committee invites you to participate in the Annual Christmas Parade on Dec. 2 at 3 p.m.

For anyone wishing to decorate floats we will be judging. All floats need to be at Lockhart School no later than 1:30 p.m. to be judged. We will give out three plaques for floats, one for each of the following categories: Most Attractive, Most Original and Best Theme. Keep these in mind while decorating.

For the benefit of the children attending the parade we are asking that no one dresses as Santa in any entry. We will be providing Santa for the end of the parade. D.A. McCloud will be our Parade Marshall this year.

A Call From Kosovo

I had a really nice surprise phone call Tuesday night ( 4:25 p.m.).

Russ Bentley called from Kosovo, he’s one of Lockhart’s National Guards. Well I mean he’s from Lockhart and in Union National Guard. I had his brother in law in the chair at the time and his sister was coming in at 5 p.m. ( Randall and Deanna Burns ).

He might not have wanted to talk to me that long, but you know my mouth. I need to find out everything. It was 10:25 a.m. over there.

I promised him I would continue to write my newsletter until he comes home or I’m fired. What he was telling me is this is a part of home, and they are reading and keeping up with us on the Internet. So see it’s very important for all of you to give me a little news about you so they don’t have to always read about me. It doesn’t have to be anything big, just some little something, that’s all. After all I just rattle on about nothing anyway. It’s easy!

Veterans

After participating in the Veterans Day celebration in Union, hearing from Russ was just a continuance of it.

Do we let them know how special they are for giving up their everyday life with family and friends to take care of other people and countries so far from home and for so long. When they come home do we shake their hands or give them a hug and tell them how appreciated they are, because if we were being attacked here in the USA they would be taking care of us too.

The Parade

I had never been in the Veteran’s Day Parade before and didn’t know I was going to be in this one. I thought Ailene and I were just going to watch it. But there we were.

All of the children were sitting on the curbs waving their flags. Every school was there, and the sidewalks were crowded and everyone knew what the day was about. The program was wonderful. And the Lockhart fans were out sitting in the street in front of the stage (the school children) for the program and if Lockhart was mentioned in anyway they cheered. Some of the children from each grade won in the essay or poster contests. And received a certificate. All in all it was a very moving ceremony and I don’t plan to miss anymore of them.

World War II Veteran

My Father was in the Army during World War II. He was just a boy of 17 and fought in the Philippines, New Guinea, and Australia. He used to say that he’d like to retire in Australia, but instead he came to South Carolina from Michigan to retire.

Great Friends

I was in Arthur State Bank today and Penny told me that today, Nov. 14, Wednesday, is Louise McCutcheon’s birthday. So by the time this comes out in the paper I want to say Happy Belated Birthday to you.

Gem and Louise were so good to me, as I was a struggling single mother, trying to start a business. They rented the lot my shop is on for little of nothing, since they knew I didn’t have any money. When I needed a car, they sold me one that they probably could get much more cash for if they sold it to anyone else. When business was slow, Gem would give me a pep talk, like, after the fair he reminded me that everyone spent their money at the fair, and everyone’s business was slow. After the Christmas Holidays, he’d give me the same talk.

I never had homemade hash until I tasted Gem’s and Louise’s, after they stopped it was really hard to find any that took its place. Louise would come into Gem’s Store on her lunch time from the Power House and cook for him and anyone else that wanted something from the grill. She would come back after work, and help in the store also. She never seemed to tire and always thought of Gem first. She’s a loving and beautiful person.

Birthdays And Anniversaries

Happy Birthday to Tommy Denton on Nov. 22, ( Thanksgiving Day). Happy Birthday to Tracy Gene Rash on Nov. 20. Nicole McMurray on the 23rd. Megan Duncan on the 24th. Scott Smith’s birthday is on the 25th.

Happy Anniversary to Mitzi and Jimmy Bennett on the 20th of November.

If I missed your birthday or anniversary it’s just that I didn’t get a call from you or one of your loved ones.

Trash Complaints

I know that a lot of you are upset with the trash men. I know because you call me.

They said they would be here on Thursdays, but sometimes miss that day, and the next, etc. But eventually they come. If they miss you all together, please call the town hall at 545-2103 so Brenda can give them a call.

What I do is drag my trash can (which they’ve torn the lid to bits ) down my hill, which is kind of slick and steep, so sometimes I fall on my behind, so I try to do it at night when no one can see me. Well anyway, on Wednesday I put it out by the road, so it’s available for Thursday, Friday or Saturday. And if I have another bag of trash I just drag it to the can and throw it on top of the rest. AND they did not pick up my trash at the shop this week. I do pay for two places. But there is hope, maybe they will get it this week.

Global Employer

After receiving the umpteenth late-night communication from a business associate in Asia, I grumbled to my son, “Don’t ever work for a global company!” A reservist, he said, “I already do. It’s called the U.S. Army.”

Listening To The Rain

Well it’s time to say good night. It’s raining out right now and I have a metal roof and metal awnings so you know what I’ll be listening to, tonight. I love to fall asleep when it’s raining.
