JONESVILLE — The Jonesville Police Department stretched a $52,000 grant far enough to not only buy two new patrol cars but to furnish both of them with new equipment.

The department took possession of the 2009 Dodge Chargers at the beginning of September. Police Chief Jimmy Wilkins said the cars each cost $22,367 or a total of $44,734. Wilkins said the vehicles were purchased with a $52,000 Justice Assistance Grant the department received from the S.C. Department of Public Safety. He said the balance of the grant was used to purchase emergency lights, sirens, radar and consoles for each vehicle.

“We managed to make it do all that, purchase the cars and the equipment,” Wilkins said. “We saved money by having them installed locally. It didn’t cost the town anything.”

The Chargers replaced a pair of 2004 Crown Victorias. Even though Jonesville is not a large town, after five years of patrolling, the Victoria’s each had over 100,000 miles on them.

Though they’re no longer the department’s primary patrol vehicles, Wikins said the old cars will be retained as backups and/or for use by reserve and other officers should they be needed.
