UNION — By the time the polls opened at 7 p.m. today, more than one out of every 17 registered voters in Union County had already cast their ballots in the general election.

There are 17,068 registered voters in Union County, and Keith Vanderford, Union County Election Commission chairman, said that as of Monday morning more than a thousand had already voted absentee on the voting machines at the Union County Voter Registrar’s Office.

In addition to those who have voted absentee at the registrar’s office, Vanderford said another 450 people had requested absentee ballots be sent them by mail. He said a number of those have been returned to the registrar’s office and though he didn’t know the exact number, Vanderford said Monday afternoon that they already fill two boxes with more continuing to come in.

The registrar’s office can receive paper absentee ballots until the polls close at 7 p.m.

Vanderford said the election commission will gather at 9 a.m today to open the envelopes containing the paper absentee ballots in preparation for counting them. They will not, however, be counted, nor will any received throughout the day until after the polls have closed.

Voting

There are 23 precincts in Union County and many of them are divided before a variety of state, county, municipal and other single-member districts. The large number of races required the printing of a total of 63 ballots for today’s election.

What ballot you vote on will be determined by where you live. To ensure you get the right ballot and the voting process goes smoothly, bring your driver’s license or voter registration card with you to the polls.

For more information about today’s election, contact the Union County Voter Registrar’s Office at 864-429-1616.
