A local group is asking the public to join them in lighting candles for the children, teachers, parents, schools and communities of Union County.

“Powerful Praying Parents” will attend the Union County Board of School Trustees meeting Monday evening to light candles with the board members. Group members Jackie Jeter and Barabara Byrd said that the purpose of the candle lighting is to demonstrate support for the schools and their mission of educating the children of Union County and to demonstrate support for the teachers, students and parents as the school year gets underway.

“The lighting of the candles means we’re not giving up, that we’re still walking in the light,” Jeter said. “We want to tell the children to try hard, don’t give up. When they think they can’t do the work, just know that they can. We want to tell the teachers to be strong and know that we care and we want to help. We want to tell the parents to take the time to help the children with their homework and we all work together as a community helping the children to become the best.”

Jeter and Byrd said they hope the community will also light candles on Monday night in support of their schools. They said it is important that the community come together, both Monday night and throughout the year, to help make Union County a better place.

The candle lighting will take place shortly after the beginning of the school board meeting at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held in Room 600 of the Career and Technology Center.
