BUFFALO — A Fourth of July celebration dating back to the early 1990s had its biggest turnout since its inception with a large crowd gathering to listen to music, sing, dance, watch a parade of golf carts and, of course, watch the traditional fireworks show over the old Buffalo Mill Pond.
The Buffalo Community’s Annual July 4th Party at the Pond celebration began at 6 p.m. Wednesday with a parade of golf carts, the first time the event has been held at the festival.
“We had 12 entries,” Jim Maness, chairman of the Buffalo Festivals Committee said Thursday. “This was the first time we’ve held it and so we had a pretty good turnout for it. They paraded all the way around the pond.”
Maness said Wednesday’s Party at the Pond attracted the largest crowd in the festival’s history.
“This got started in the early 1990s, it was started by Linberg Holcombe,” Maness said. “This year we had the biggest crowd we’ve ever had and I’ve been to practically all of them.
“I don’t know how many people were here but we had a big crowd,” he said. “We had people parking all the way down Main Street and around the pond. They parked all around the pavilion and across the highway in the cleared lot where the smokestack used to be.”
The celebration featured a DJ, dancing and karaoke. There were also a large number of vendors who Maness said were also happy with the big turnout.
“Every one of the vendors said they did real well,” Maness said.
The vendors weren’t the only ones who enjoyed the evening. Maness said he heard from a number of people who said they enjoyed the celebration, especially the fireworks display over the pond.
“We have music, dancing and singing right up until the fireworks display and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves,” Maness said. “I had a lot of people tell me afterwards that they really enjoyed the fireworks. They said that we had a really good fireworks show. Everyone said they had a good time.”
