PROSPERITY — Mid-Carolina defeated Whitmire’s varsity softball team 1-0 on Wednesday.
Mid-Carolina scored its run in the third. Shannon Traylor had a one-out infield single and advanced to second on a bad throw. She later stole second and scored on a wild pitch.
Whitmire's best chance to score was in the sixth. A two-out rally was started when Nicole Morgan struck out, but advanced on a dropped strike three. Karly Jenkins walked and Jenna Baker drilled a pitch right at Traylor in center for the third out of the inning.
Pitching and good defense dominated the rest of the game. Whitmire’s Kerry Jenkins had eight strikeouts, while giving up six hits in seven innings.
Karly Jenkins was 1-for-2 with a double in the first; Kerry Jenkins was 1-for-3 with a single in the seventh; and Mikaela Malpass was 1-for-3 for the Lady Wolverines.
“The varsity played its most complete game; we just couldn't get the balls to fall or catch any breaks,” said Whitmire coach Dan McGlohorn. “I’m proud of the way we played.”
WCS (3-6) travels to Southside Christian on Friday. The JV team lost 12-1 to Mid-Carolina.
UCHS JV BASEBALL
CLINTON — Union County’s JV baseball team defeated Clinton 5-1 on Wednesday.
Dillon Rogers went all the way for the Jackets on the mound.
At the plate: Jake Walton was 2- for-2; Adam Lawson was 2-for-3 with a double; David Gilkison was 2-for-2; Ricky Rice was 1-for-2 with a triple; Gerald Alman was 1-for-2 with a double; Josh Armstrong, Cal Arnold and Dillon Barber all had hits for UCHS.
The JV hosts Clinton on Friday.
UCHS TENNIS
CLINTON — Union County’s boys’ tennis team lost, 6-0, to Clinton on Wednesday.
In singles play, No. 1 Crocker d. David Hope 6-0, 6-0; No. 2 Undaria d. Joseph Sawyer 6-2, 6-2; No. 3 Lawton d. Jacob Robbins 6-4, 6-1; No. 4 Powell d. Brett Ayers 6-4, 6-0 (10-3); and No. 5 Macmillian d. Andrew Adamo 6-2, 7-5.
In doubles play, No. 2 Craven and Iusti d. Aaron West and Seth McFarland 6-1, 2-6 (10-7).
“I thought Brett, Aaron and Seth played well and all were capable of winning,” said UCHS coach Tom Adamo. “We have to step onto the court with confidence and a little fire. We have to stop playing scared against the top teams and our bottom half of the lineup must start winning for us to have a great season. We were just flat and beaten before we started the match.”
UCHS (6-4) hosts Blue Ridge today.
UCHS SOFTBALL
Union County’s varsity softball team defeated Clinton 2-1 on Wednesday.
Britni Ward (5-1) was the winning pitcher. Megan Russell led the Jackets at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double.
UCHS (5-1, 4-1) hosts Riverside tonight.
UCHS GOLF
YORK — Union County’s varsity golf team competed on Wednesday at Spring Lakes Country Club.
Score: York 156, Nations Ford 161, UCHS 172.
UCHS scores: Hunter Parks 41, Adam Gault 41, Jordan Crumpton 42, Billy Weibley 48, Nick Monroe 49 and Clay Moore 51.
“We are still working hard to get four people to play well on the same day,” said Jacket coach David Maness.
The Jackets return to action at Chapman on April 13.
