UNION — The Union County JV football team seemed to be in control during Thursday’s bout with Newberry before the Bulldogs used a late surge to slip away with a 32-20 win.

Jackets quarterback Matthew Barnett connected with Roscoe Johnson for a 35-yard touchdown pass with 2:34 left in the first quarter and Union County took a 6-0 lead.

On the ensuing possession, the Newberry quarterback was forced out of the pocket and on the run, dodging several tackles to put his team on the goal line. The Bulldogs put it in the end zone on the next play for a 6-6 tie.

Shamar Glenn returned a kickoff for 45 yards to set up a 25-yard Montray Feaster catch and go touchdown to reclaim the lead, 12-6.

However, Newberry answered with a 40-yard haul that was capped off by a 2-yard touchdown run.

The Bulldogs converted the first extra points of the game to take the 13-12 lead.

Barnett hooked up with Johnson for a 25-yard pass then found his go-to guy for 13 more yards. Demetrius Brown finished off the Union County drive with a 35-yard touchdown run and Michael Guinn scampered in for the two-point conversion.

Newberry knotted things back up just before intermission with a 3-yard touchdown and successful point after kick.

Mistakes proved costly for the Jackets in the second half and Newberry tacked on 12 more points as a result for the 32-20 final.
