Winning is always a gratifying experience and the Yellow Jackets were soaking it up on Thursday in a 7-on-7 challenge with Gaffney and Laurens.
Union County kicked things off with a 29-20 win over Gaffney.
The Jackets went to work executing both short and long pass plays. Gaffney got off to a less impressive offensive start with an interception that put three points on Union County’s side of the board. However, the Indians found themselves up by a single digit with 1:50 left on the clock. Union County quarterback, Keiston Smith found his man in the end zone to claim the lead and with time running out Union County picked off a Gaffney pass attempt to end game one.
Game two pitted Union County against Laurens. The Jackets executed quickly and methodically on offense with Laurens recording just one defensive stop for two points. A stellar defensive performance held Laurens off on every single drive for a 35-2 final.
In game three, Union County hit pay dirt on the first play with a crowd pleasing pass to Victor Ruth. Meanwhile, Gaffney used four plays for seven yards before a short pass resulted in a first down and two plays later, the Indians finally found the end zone to tie. A Jackets’ pass attempt was picked off for three points and Union County earned a defensive stop for two points. The Jackets converted on the next drive and both teams added two with defensive stops. Another Union County defensive stand resulted in a 19-11 Jackets’ win.
Kalay Jones scored two touchdowns in game three and the Union County defense was solid, tallying a 21-3 final over Laurens.
The Jackets’ lone loss of the night came during the final bout with Gaffney. Down 22-14 with the clock winding down, Union County put it in the end zone but the extra-point pass was batted away for a 22-21 final.
Meanwhile, on the UCHS lower field, the linemen challenge was also dominated by the Jackets. Union County’s A team placed first, winning every event, and the B team finished third.
