A new local business offering a variety of tasty treats will hold a grand opening/ribbon cutting event on Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Western Food Korral — located at 843 Sardis Rd. — offers ice cream, snow cones, sundaes, banana splits, Coca Cola products, Gatorade and its soon-to-be famous upside down hot dog.

Owner Marion Hawkins said people are already asking him, “What exactly is an upside down hot dog?”

Hawkins said he got the idea of the upside down hot dog during a visit to New York. While watching a public access channel, Hawkins saw a commercial for a restaurant featuring the upside down dog.

“Sometimes you can bite into a regular hot dog and onions go everywhere,” Hawkins said, assuring that such a problem would not exist with the upside down version.

Hawkins said he simply reverses the steps of the traditional hot dog assembly. Onions go in the bun first, followed by chili and a wiener, with ketchup and mustard on top.

“Every bite will be a good bite,” Hawkins said.

Western Food Korral is already open for business, and Hawkins said with the warm weather, his biggest sellers have been snow cones and Gatorade.

During this Saturday’s grand opening ceremony, the first 25 children will receive a free snow cone or ice cream cone and a balloon, and the first 25 adults will receive free ice cream and a $5 gift certificate to be used during the week of July 9-17. After those 25 gift certificates are redeemed, a drawing will be held, and four people will receive $25 in cash as thanks for participating in the grand opening event.
