UNION — The life and career of a former educator, coach and city councilman will be celebrated as part of a fund-raising effort on behalf of an organization that helps young men turn their lives around.
AMIkids White Pines and the Paul J. Glenn Sr. fund-raising committee will host the Inaugural Paul J. Glenn Sr. Leadership Award Golf Tournament and Dinner on Saturday. The event is described as “a celebration of the life and legacy of the late Paul J. Glenn Sr.”
The press release announcing the event describes Glenn as “a winner in all aspects of the term” during a career “of service to young people and his community” that spanned more than 50 years.
As a coach, Glenn “amassed over 600 combined wins in football, baseball, basketball, and track along with three state championships.”
In addition to his coaching career, Glenn became Chief of Officials for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. He was also the first African-American principal at Union High School and the first African-American elected to Union City Council and to serve as Mayor Pro Tem.
The event will include a golf tournament that will take place Saturday at the River Chase Golf Club, 459 Fairwood Blvd., Union. Registration for the tournament is at 8:30 a.m. with the shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
A dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Union County High School.
Guest speaker will be Larry J. Stevens, assistant professor of Management and Regional Director for Winthrop University’s Small Business Development Center.
Stevens is a Union native who was raised on Horseshoe Circle. He is the son of Beverly Sims (Jimmie) and Larry D. Stevens (Tina).
After graduating from Union High School, Stevens joined the U.S. Air Force. Upon being medically discharged from the service, Stevens began his studies at South Carolina State University, completing his bachelor’s degree in 2001 and his master’s degree in 2005. He is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Stevens and his wife, Janell, are the parents of three daughters, Brianna, Skylyn and Tori.
