A Gaston man is being charged by both the Union Public Safety Department and the Union County Sheriff’s Office with stealing a woman’s debit card and using it to withdraw $720 from her bank account.
Calvin Lee Thomas Jr., 39, 427 Ben Spires Road, Gaston, is charged twice — once by the public safety department and again by the sheriff’s office — with financial transaction card theft. He was arrested Monday.
Thomas is accused of stealing the victim’s debit card and making a series of withdrawals on her account from ATMs at local convenience stores. The victim filed a complaint with the public safety department saying she was dining at a local restaurant on Nov. 20 and when she went to pay noticed her debit card was missing. The report states the card had been used that day at an ATM store on Arthur Boulevard to withdraw $202.50
The victim also filed a complaint with the sheiff’s office because three of the withdrawals made with her card were at stores on the Duncan Bypass outside the city and in the Monarch community. She said she had two debit cards and tried to use the other only to have the transaction rejected because of insufficient funds. The woman contacted her bank and was told of withdrawals totaling $720 and the locations where they were made.
Deputies reviewed surveillance footage at the stores and observed Thomas using the ATMs at both stores. Thomas went to the sheriff’s office on Nov. 22 and gave a written statement claiming the victim had given him the debit card and that he’d given her back the money.
Thomas was arrested Monday and transported to the Union County Jail where he remained as of Wednesday afternoon.
Abuse
A Union man is accused of beating someone from room to room and outside a house on Pea Ridge Highway in Jonesville.
Kyle Ellison Bishop, 26, 962 Old Ferry Road, was charged Monday with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature.
The victim told deputies that Bishop had become upset with Saturday afternoon and repeatedly hit, pushed and threw her around. She said the attack began in the bedroom of the house and continued throughout the building and into the driveway.
The responding deputy reported seeing marks on the woman’s knees and her left ankle was swollen. The woman also said she had pain in her lower back. The Union County EMS was called to the scene and transported the woman to Wallace Thomson Hospital for treatment.
Bishop had left the scene before the deputy arrived but a warrant was issue for his arrest and he was taken into custody two days later. He was transported to the jail where he remained until being released Tuesday on bond.
