UNION — The Fair Forest Chapter, NSDAR, met Sept. 4 in the Union County Museum meeting room.

Regent Margaret McCarley called the meeting to order. Chaplain Jane Owenby read the Devotional based on Psalm 63:6, “Be Still and Know,” by Millie Stamm. Flag Chairman Amy Bruce led the chapter in the Pledge of Allegiance the Flag of the U.S., The American’s Creed, The Salute to the Flag of South Carolina, and the singing of The Star-Spangled Banner.

Chairman Martha Whitener read the President General’s Messsage and the National Defense Report. Secretary Mrs. Bruce read the minutes of the previous meeting and Acting Treasurer Maudine Hickman read the Treasurer’s Report.

The program, “Women’s Right to Vote,” was presented by Mrs. Owenby.

On Aug. 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution became law, granting American women the right to vote in federal elections, and in 1921, South Carolina passed an act allowing women to vote in state elections. In 1967, South Carolina women gained the right to serve on juries and that goal was attained in 1969. Women’s Equality Day, Aug. 23, 2012, marks 92 years since women won the right to vote.

The next meeting will be held in the Union County Museum meeting room. Author Sheila Ingle will present the program on her book, “Courageous Kate, A Daughter of the American Revolution.”
