Errors, errors, errors. They were frequent and costly for Union Post 22 in Monday night’s American Legion contest versus Gaffney and Post 109 took advantage, snatching a 6-3 win.
Union’s Dylan Rogers worked from the hill for seven innings before Jimmy Johnson entered to throw two innings of relief.
The right hander, Rogers, retired seven batters on strikeouts and gave up no earned runs with Gaffney’s only earned run coming in the eighth inning.
“You can’t have 10 errors in a ball game and win,” said Union Coach Tommy Ford. “We just made too many mistakes in the field and it killed us.”
While Union struggled with errors, Gaffney’s defense was solid.
Post 22 was down to its last out and Adam Lawson was standing on second after a double down the left field line when Josh Simpson hit a rocket into center field. However, Bryce Spurlin ran it down and with ups that would even impress Lebron, snagged the fly ball as he crashed into the fence, robbing Simpson of a two-run homer.
Union looks to Simpson for offensive consistency and he didn’t disappoint on Monday, contributing an RBI single in the first, a walk in the fifth and a lead off line to left field in the eighth.
Jake Walton, who also provides leadership at the plate, singled in the first and scored off of Simpson’s hit. In the fifth, Walton tagged an RBI double to center field, plating Devontae “Fox” Glenn, then singled up the middle in the seventh and followed up with a double in the eighth.
Lawson and Bubba Means delivered Union’s only other hits.
Lawson went 2-5 with a single and a double while Means sent Post 22’s final run across the plate in the bottom of the eighth with a double to right field.
Post 22 is scheduled to face Inman, on the road, Wednesday, and Ford said his team must find the intensity it had earlier in the season if they’re going to get back to State.
“We started out like a ball of fire,” said Ford. “That’s what we’ve got to get back to.”
