A tip from a concerned citizen helped land a man in jail for possession of methamphetamine Tuesday morning.
Robert Hugh Campbell, 153 Pearson Road, Belton, was arrested by deputies with the Union County Sheriff’s Office acting on a tip that a suspicious vehicle was at the end of Eagle Court in Union. The responding deputy spotted the vehicle, a white Plymouth with three men in it.
The deputy asked for and received permission to search the vehicle. He then searched the men and found in Campbell’s front pants pocket a small amount of what he said Campbell told him was “crank” or methamphetamine.
Campbell was arrested and transported to the Union County Jail where he remained until being released on bond Thursday evening.
Sex Offender
A Union man’s repeated failure to obey the law and register as a sex offender landed him in jail.
Leon Lamorris Glenn, 203 Wilburn St., Union, is charged by the sheriff’s office with failure to register as a sex offender. Glenn was arrested Tuesday and transported to the jail where he remained until being released on bond Wednesday afternoon.
The incident report filed at the time of Glenn’s arrest states he “did not comply with the registration requirements as outlined by State Statutes and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division for his 2009 registration by” Nov. 30, 2009. It further states “despite numerous discussions with the sheriff’s office personnel about his registration responsibilities and his attempts to register without completing all the requirements, Mr. Glenn presented himself for registration without being able to fulfill the requirements of the statute.” This, the report states, was Glenn’s “third offense of failure to register in violation of Section 23-3-430 of the South Carolina code of laws.”
Arrested Two Months Later
How long is the long arm of the law? Long enough to reach out and catch a Union teen two months after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Jarvis Andrew Jeter, 19, 441 Whitlock Lake Road, Jonesville, is charged by the sheriff’s office with petit larceny and minor in possession of beer. Jeter was arrested Tuesday but the crime he is accused of committing occurred in October.
The offense report states shortly after 2 p.m. on Oct. 8 a deputy patrolling on Union Boulevard spotted a black male he identified as Jeter running across the parking lot of a store with a case of Bud Light beer under his arm. At the time the deputy spotted Jeter, a Bud Light truck was being unloaded in the store parking lot. The deputy reported he approached Jeter and asked him where he’d gotten the beer. He said Jeter said he’d bought it.
The deputy, however, reports he knew Jeter was underage and could not legally purchase alcohol. He said he told Jeter to come with him to the Bud Light truck in the parking lot. The deputy said Jeter turned as if to comply but then set down the beer and ran away down West Henrietta Street through Chambertown.
Jeter could not be located but the deputy recovered the case of beer which was valued at $15. It was returned to the Budweiser employee who had been unloading the truck. The employee was listed as the complainant in the case.
Though he eluded them for nearly two months, deputies arrested Jeter on Tillman Street on Tuesday afternoon and transported him to jail where he remained as of Thursday afternoon.
Jeter is also charged by the public safety department with financial transaction card fraud for allegedly using a woman’s EBT card to purchase $175 worth of goods for a local grocery store without the owner’s permission.
