The southeastern Union County community will host its seventh-annual Community Fun Day/Back to School Bash from 1-7 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Carlisle Community Playground located at Pinckney and Cambridge streets.
Several activities are planned for the weekend event.
Carlisle Mayor Mary Ferguson-Glenn said the fun day promises to have something for all ages to enjoy.
“We welcome everybody,” she said. “Bring the lawn chair, sit back and enjoy the music. Our lives are so busy these days, how often do you get the chance to just sit down and relax with the family?”
Carlisle Community Fun Day has everything — music, food, fun, rides and prizes.
The day’s events will include music by D.J. Darren Peake and the Southern Smooth Band.
“They’re quite good,” Ferguson-Glenn said about the band. “I think this is their fourth year with us.”
There also will be a cookout, Bingo games, giveaways and other games for children and adults, rides including a trackless train and giant water slide, a fashion show and a talent show with Mr. and Ms. Fun Day being crowned.
Anyone can participate in the day’s events and the community is accepting registrations for the talent show and fashion show through the end of this week. Those interested in participating should call town hall at (864) 427-1505.
There even will be horses, horseshoes, blood pressure checks and Carol Willis will be on hand to discuss senior citizens issues.
But the day wouldn’t be complete without thinking about sending the kids back to school and Carlisle is doing everything it can to get the children in the community what they need to start the 2010-11 school year right.
The town has been collecting donations for school items and will giveaway backpacks and all those items it has purchased through donations during the community fun day on Saturday.
Ferguson-Glenn said the community was able to give away 50 backpacks full of school supplies last year and she hopes more can be given through this year’s Back to School Bash.
“We want to get as many as we can and some donated funds can come in at the last minute,” the mayor said.
Anyone who would like to donate and help Carlisle get as much as possible to send children back to school prepared can also contact town hall. Donations will be accepted through the end of this week and even on Saturday during the event.
The community fun day/Back to School Bash began with the town wanting to give back to its community by having a family-oriented event.
“Each year, it grew and we are to the point where we are now,” Ferguson-Glenn said.
She and the town hope everyone who attends has a good time spending the day with friends and family, but the mayor also doesn’t want people to forget one of the main purposes of the fun day and bash is to help the children of the community with school supplies.
“It’s all about the children,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “They’re the future. We need to do everything we can for them.”
