One of the most common family pets in Union County is the family dog. Just about everyone has at least one, and many times the family dog is treated more like a child than a dog. Whether your pup is a prized show dog, or just a mixed up mutt, he is special to you.

The Union County 4-H K-9 Club is gearing up for their 2012-2013 club year, and would like to invite local dog owners to take an active part. The 4-H club is open to youth, ages 5-19, and their families. Hopefully, with increased membership, we will be able to sponsor AKC clinics, obedience training, dog shows, agility training and many more dog-related events.

Two special events are already in the planning stages for late August and September. At the August meeting of the 4-H K-9 Club, we will have a guest speaker and his beagles to demonstrate training techniques for hunting dogs.

Then, on Sept. 29, the 2nd Annual AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day will be held at the Union County Fairgrounds, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Dog owners can have their dogs micro-chipped for a small fee. There will be grooming stations, a demonstration by the Union County Police K-9 unit, information about AKC Canine Good Citizen classes, AKC Star Puppy Kindergarten classes, Basic Obedience classes and much more.

Beth Timer of Timer’s Tiny Dogs will be teaching three Obedience Commands, along with the proper hand signals. She will also be offering the Canine Good Citizen Test to certify your dog in obedience, and CGC, through AKC for a small fee.

If you just want to bring your pup out for a good day of fun, the Responsible Dog Ownership Day is just the place. Other activities will include a Fun Dog Show with prizes, door prizes, food, face painting and much more. Admission for the day is one can of dog food, which will be donated to the City and County Animal Shelters. All dogs must be on a leash.

For more information on the 4-H K-9 club or the AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day, visit the Clemson Extension Office on the Fairgrounds or call (864) 427-6259, Ext. 113.
