In what’s becoming a depressing refrain another Union County official is facing criminal charges.

Lisa Ward, 50, 164 Haney Road, Buffalo was arrested Friday afternoon and charged by the Union Public Safety Deparment with exploitation of a vulnerable adult and controlled substance theft. Public Safety Director Sam White said that Ward is charged with stealing hydrocodone from a vulnerable adult for her own use. He said he could not comment further because the investigation is continuing.

The warrants issued for Ward’s arrest states that the incident occurred on Sept. 23 when Ward took the vulnerable adult to the doctor and then to a local drug store to have the prescription for Hydrocodone filled. The warrants allege that Ward then stole the Hydrocodone from the vulnerable adult.

Ward was the county’s public works director and recycling coordinator until her arrest.

Supervisor Tommy Sinclair said that he had heard Ward was going to be arrested Friday and called her into his office. Sinclair said Ward admitted that she was turning herself in for arrest. He said he then suspended with pay until the end of the year and then without pay after Jan. 1. She will remain suspended until the matter is resolved. If Ward is convicted Sinclair said she will be terminated as a county employee.

Sinclair said that Ward’s assistant, Myron Harris, will assume her responsibilities until she either returns or a replacement is hired.

Ward is the latest local official to be arrested/indicted and/or convicted of criminal activity over the past two years.

Former Union mayor Bruce Morgan and building inspector Jeff Lawson are currently serving sentences in federal prison after pleading guilty to extorting kickbacks from contractors seeking to do business with the city.

Earlier this year, former county supervisor Donnie Betenbaugh, former sheriff Howard Wells, former tax assessor Willie Randally Jr. and two others were indicted on a number of federal drug and/or corruption charges and are awaiting trial. Betenbaugh was suspended from office by Gov. Mark Sanford who appointed Sinclair as supervisor.

Former Clerk of Court Brad Morris was charged by the state with embezzlement shortly after resigning his office. Sanford appointed Freddie Gault to serve as clerk of court.

How do we get all the crooks in so called leaderships positions in this county.

I think it is time we begin to look at every person we vote for instead of listening to those who own them or are their friends and appoint them. We still elect those who do the appointing or hiring.

It is time we check out those we put in charge of instead of being enticed by some one we may know or repect.
