Kennedy Beatty came through in a big way for the Union Junior Legion on Wednesday night hurling a three hitter to earn the 2-1 win over Inman and putting his team in a three-way tie for first in the region.

“It was the best I’ve seen Kennedy pitch,” said Union Coach Donnie Vinson. “Inman is a hitting team and good pitching stopped that good hitting.”

Beatty was assisted in the field by a sturdy Union defense that held Inman scoreless until the fifth inning when an RBI single on two outs tied the game at 1-1. Union’s first run had come in the bottom of the first inning. Jacob Roper tagged an RBI single into left field, scoring Bradley McKeown, who had reached on a hit to centerfield. With the game knotted up in the fifth, Danny Glenn hit a grounder to short stop and beat the throw for an infield single. Beatty followed with a fielder’s choice that plated the go ahead run.

A defensive battle ensued in the final two innings with Union collecting the only hit when Michael Todd Harris singled in the sixth. After stealing second, Harris was left stranded and Beatty took the mound for the seventh time where Union shut the door on Inman with three up, three down in the inning.

“It was a good defensive game,” said Union Assistant Coach Craig King. “Our pitching was excellent and it was an overall great win. Our hitting wasn’t as good as it could’ve been — but a win is a win — and we’ll take it.”
