A great Christmas gift

To the editor:

Some people have a hard time thinking of a good Christmas present. You don’t want to seem cheap, but you don’t want to spend too much either.

Something that is just about the right price is a subscription to the Union Daily Times.

Maybe a friend or a relative needs a present, and you happen to know that they do not currently have a subscription. It would be the perfect gift.

All newspapers in the whole country are on hard times these days, and they could certainly do with some more subscribers. Even big city newspapers sometime go out of business nowadays, let alone shoestring operations in a small Southern town. Union, small though it has always been, has always had at least one newspaper since the Unionville Journal, ancestor of the Daily Times, began publication in 1851. The museum, in fact, has a bound volume of the first year’s issues, 1851-52. A tradition dating back 161 years needs to be kept up. Electronic communication is good, but there is no substitute for actually holding the hard copy in your hand!

Merry Christmas,

Allan Charles
