The president of an organization dedicated to providing Christian education for members of the clergy and the laity will address the 128th Annual Session of the Pacolet River Baptist Sunday School Convention Saturday morning.
Dr. Bryant Scott Cheek, Sr., a Union native, is president of the South Carolina Baptist Congress of Christian Education, a department of the Education and Missionary Convention of South Carolina. The Congress provides training for church leaders and laity, offering more than 100 classes through its various divisions including the Division of Biblical Studies, Division of Christian Education, Division of Christian Church Leadership Development; College Students Division, Division of Ministry in the Fine Arts; and Youth Division. There is also a Pastors and Ministers Division which provides clergy with additional training.
The Congress’ headquarters are currently located in Laurens, but moves around the state from year to year. It was in Orangeburg this past July and will move next year to Sumter and then the following year to Greenville. The annual relocations are designed to make it more convenient for clergy and laity to travel to the Congress for the courses it offers.
A 1988 graduate of Union High School, Dr. Cheek graduated from Morris College in Sumter in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Education. He graduated from Morehouse School of Religion Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Ga., in 1995 with a Master of Divinity in Pastoral Care and Counseling. In 2010, he received his Doctor of Ministry Degree in Preaching and Leadership from United Theological Seminary in Trotwood, Ohio. The topic of his doctoral dissertation was “Managing Money Through Blended Families.”
Dr. Cheek received his ministerial license on July 30, 1989 and was ordained into the Baptist Ministry on Feb. 16, 1992. Since Jan. 1992 he has served as Senior Pastor of Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Laurens. He has been president of the South Carolina Baptist Congress of Christian Education since July 2010. From July 2000 to July 2004 he served as Associate Dean for Tumbling Shoals Baptist Congress of Christian Education.
His counseling credentials include eight units (200 hours credit) of Clinical Pastoral Education at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center from June 1995 to June 1997.
The 128th Annual Session of the Pacolet River Baptist Sunday School Convention will be held Saturday at the Baptist Center on Lovers Lane in Union. Devotions will begin at 9:15 a.m. and Rev. Kevin Russell Sheppard of Mt. Rowell Baptist Churchwill bring the Devotional Message at 9:30 a.m. Rev. Sheppard is serving as the host pastor for the covention and Mt. Rowell is serving as the host church.
Dr. Cheek will bring greetings to the convention and will speak on the theme of the convention, “The Pulpit and Pew Connection.”
The Pacolet River Baptist Sunday School Convention is the educational arm of the Pacolet River Baptist Association. The Convention provides Christian education for the 20 churches in Union County that are members of the association. The classes offered by the Convention are in Christian Leadership. The Convention focuses on the training of church leaders who in turn carry what they’ve learned back to their churches.
The Convention’s Moderator is Malachi Rogers, Sr., and its President is Lena J. Thompson.
