Sheriff David Taylor says officers hope to take 56 people into custody in a drug roundup that began early Tuesday morning.
“This is a joint department undercover drug operation that has been ongoing two or three months,” Taylor said. “There are varying drug charges throughout the city and the county.”
Taylor said the drug roundup, called “Summer Slam,” is a joint operation of the sheriff’s office, the Union Public Safety Department and SLED. He said the sheriff’s office has 51 warrants on 28 people while the public safety department has 61 warrants on 28 people. Taylor said the roundup began at 6:30 a.m. and by noon most all of the suspects had been arrested.
The charges will range from distribution of prescription medication to distribution of crack cocaine, ecstasy and marijuana.
Taylor said most of the suspects have been taken in without incident. A man on whom officers had a drug warrant fled in the Lakewood Area Tuesday morning, but he was apprehended.
The latest drug sweep is a continuation of Operation Spring Clean, which the sheriff’s office, public safety department and Jonesville Police launched in April, Taylor said. Sixty-nine warrants were issued then.
In between Operation Spring Clean and Summer Slam officers working cases have made several arrests on drug eradication events and search warrants and seized over three pounds of marijuana and about 4 1/2 grams of cocaine, Taylor said.
Taylor and Chief Sam White commended the efforts of the task force in making the cases.
