UNION — A haircut at a local salon this Saturday can help in the fight against breast cancer.

Ronna Pruitt, manager of the SmartStyle family hair salon in the Wal-Mart super center, announced Monday that the salon is once again taking part in the Regis Corporation’s annual “Clip for the Cure” event.

SmartStyle is a division of Regis and Pruitt said the company’s more than 7,400 corporate salons in North America are participating in the event which raises funds for the Regis Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.

She said 10 percent of the proceeds of every haircut at the salon on Saturday will be donated to the foundation.

“People can get a haircut and help find a cure,” Pruitt said. “This cause is very close to many of our clients and stylists because so many of us know someone who has been touched by the disease. We hope that through Clip for the Cure, more women will become aware of the disease and take preventive measures to detect it in its early stages. Most importantly, we hope the money we raise will eventually lead to a cure.”

In addition to Saturday’s fundraiser, Pruitt said SmartStyle will provide its customers with other opportunities to donate to breast cancer research through Oct. 31, including:

• Ten percent of net proceeds from all private label product sales will be donated to the foundation.

• Salons will sell $1 breast cancer awareness magnets and exclusive pink bracelets for $12.

• Customer and business donations to the foundation will be accepted at participating salons.

• Limited edition pink products will be available for purchase, including scarves, hats and reusable cups.

• Customers are invited to get their nails polished for $5 or their face painted for $3.

• Feather hair extensions will be sold for $3 or pink highlights for $10.

• Customers will be able to register to win professional products and a flat iron for $3.

• Hairs bows for $3 to $5 or Pillowcase Dresses for $30 to $35.

• Pink Ribbon window decals for $3 and car tags for $8.

• Wreaths for special occasions for varied prices.

• Pink Ribbons for $1 to display in the salon in honor or in memory of loved ones.

• Samples of professional products for $1 to $4.

Pruitt said that through the sale of these items and Saturday’s Clip for the Cure event, Regis hopes to raise $1 million for breast cancer research this year. She said that to date, Regis stylists have raised $9 million for breast cancer research.

In 2011, Pruitt said the Union salon $4,069 and placed second out of 2,423 salons in its division for its fund raising efforts.

In addition the Regis events, Pruitt said the Union salon is holding its own “Spirit Week” fundraiser. Each day of the week will have a different theme with the salon’s staff dressing accordingly. Monday was Hillbilly Day, Tuesday was Princess Day, Wednesday is Team Spirit Day, Thursday will be 80s Day, Friday will be Tacky Day, and Saturday will be Pink Out.

“What we’re doing is people come in and vote for the stylist that is best-dressed by donating a dollar,” Pruitt said. “This will be donated to breast cancer research.”

Pruitt said SmartStyle will also sponsor a Skate Nights from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 25 at the Union Skate Center. Participants will be charged $5 per person. The event will also include a Kids Costume Contest for children 10 and under. The proceeds from the Skate Night will be donated to the foundation.

“We’re excited about this year,” Pruitt said. “We’ve set a goal of $5,000 for this year and we’re at $1,500 now.”
