As I was completing the requirements for a Master of Divinity in late 2015, I conducted research in the Union County community to determine where the church can make the biggest impact from an outreach perspective. As I conducted my informal research, one common problem that seemed to grip the area is the crippling effect of drugs and substance abuse. In fact as I conducted an interview with a prison chaplain, I asked the following question:
What is the number one reason people are here?
His verbatim response was: It is probably something to do with drugs. If it is not directly involved in drugs, it is indirectly related to drugs. For example, the sale of drugs is an issue as well as robbery. Someone robs to support a habit they cannot break, and they end up in here. The 17-20 year-old age group seems to be chronically impacted by this phenomenon.
Because substance abuse and it’s impact in the community is so prominent, Wyatt’s Chapel will host a workshop on Saturday, March 18, 2017, focused on the issue of substance abuse and mental health. Our objective as a church is to raise the level of awareness and facilitate the process of offering resources to help individuals to deal with situations that impact their lives. In the next few weeks, we will feature a short bio for each of the persons that will speak during our workshop and then answer questions in a panel discussion format. We look forward to sharing with you as we bring issues of our community to the forefront with an emphasis on bringing kingdom solutions.
